KIPP New Jersey is creating a network of schools in Camden and Newark where our students are prepared to succeed in college and beyond. This year we grew to ensure that opportunity is reaching over 4,500 students across our two cities. Through their hard work, the dedication of supportive families and teachers, and a deeply held, shared belief in their future, they are proving the possible.

Our turnaround campus at KIPP Life Academy in Newark continues to show strong improvement in PARCC scores year over year.

64%

Eighth Graders proficient on the more challenging PARCC Algebra test.

Reaching for a higher bar: One third of KIPP NJ eighth graders took the PARCC high school Algebra 1 test and outperformed state and district averages.

In August 2015, KIPP NJ opened our first middle school in Camden, KIPP Lanning Square Middle, and took responsibility for educating 252 fifth through eighth grade students from an existing school. Through the collective hard work and commitment of students and teachers, students at the turnaround school saw four times improvement in ELA scores compared to last year.

From a Parent:

"There is a huge difference in the type of education she's getting compared to what my children got when they were in school. These kids are brilliant and KIPP is bringing that out in them. When my granddaughter excels, everyone celebrates with her. The teachers at her school make learning fun and are preparing her for success. They make you feel like family. I've seen the principal greet every child in a family by name from youngest to oldest. Even the kids that don't go there are treated like family."
Andrea Whye, KIPP Lanning Square Primary grandparent

To and Through College

Nationally, over 77% of students from families in the top income quartile go on to college, versus just 8% of students from families in the bottom income quartile. KIPP's K-12 rigor, along with KIPP Through College support, are closing that gap.

From an Alumnus:

"Newark is a city full of kids like I was who can do great things and I believe KIPP schools can help make it happen. The work KIPP is doing in Newark means other kids in our community will have the same opportunities I did and it gives them, and our city, the future it deserves."
Justin Oglesby, KIPP TEAM Academy alum, Johnson and Wales University Class of 2016

Being the Change

As an organization, we continue to invest in the community as well as in the education of future generations of leaders.

KIPP TEAM Academy founding student A’Dorian Murray-Thomas launched SHE Wins, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening girls affected by violence, and was recently named a White House “Champion of Change” for her work.

Our KIPP Seek scholars turned a vacant lot into something special: the Aldine Street Community Garden. Now they’re learning about agriculture and biology.

We recently celebrated the opening of a new high school and athletic field representing a $35 million investment in the Newark community and creation of 36 jobs for local residents during construction.

KIPP Rise Academy Athletic Field

Providing a safe sports field for our students and Newark Public School’s West Side High students through a shared partnership.

Solidarity and Support

Hundreds of KIPP male mentors across schools participated in "Dads Walk Your Child to School Day" to support the education of the children in their lives.
