KIPP New Jersey to host inaugural KIPP NJ Alumni Summit

Newark, New Jersey (January 9, 2019) – Continuing its tradition of advocating and supporting its students well after graduation, KIPP New Jersey will host the inaugural KIPP NJ Alumni Summit Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Hahne Building, one of the most significant architectural achievements in Newark’s resurgence. Event sponsors include: Prudential, M&T Bank, Asurion, NJM Insurance Group, Rutgers Newark, UBS and Fortell Communications. Marcus Samuelsson, chef, restaurateur and co-owner of Red Rooster Harlem and Marcus B&P Newark; and Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF (United Negro College Fund), will be among the featured speakers.

“KIPP NJ has a long-standing tradition of preparing its students for what lies ahead after graduation, but that doesn’t mean that preparation has to end when they leave our schools,” said Ryan Hill, founder and CEO of KIPP New Jersey “We are thrilled to be hosting this event for our talented alumni, and it is our hope to make this an annual gathering that grows bigger and better each year.”

More than 300 KIPP NJ alumni and representatives from Business & Finance; Law & Criminal Justice; STEM; Education; Medicine & Pharma; Psychology & Social Work; Entertainment Sports & Media; Fashion & Arts; Tech, Operations & Logistics; and Technical & Trade industries will be in attendance. The day will include alumni-focused workshops, industry panels and a networking cocktail hour.

“I see similar qualities in KIPP New Jersey students and alumni as I saw in my younger self: determination, empathy and community-mindedness,” said Marcus Samuelsson. “That is why it was important to me to participate in this transformative event.”

“What better way is there to spend our time than helping shape the leaders of tomorrow,” said Dr. Lomax. “UNCF is the largest scholarship granting organization for students of color, and if my personal narrative and career experience in helping students get to and through college can impact even one student attending this event, then I will consider it a successful day.”
