National charter network KIPP to launch college counseling program in large urban school districts
KIPP, the United States' largest charter school network, is launching its first-ever College Counseling Institute in Texas later this month to encourage collaboration with three major urban school districts — New York City, Newark and Miami — to improve college outcomes citywide for underrepresented students.
The three-day institute will take place in San Antonio from July 23-25 and bring together leaders from KIPP, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Newark Public Schools and New York City Public Schools as well as Aspire Public Schools, an independent public charter school network. At least 20 participants from the four partners are expected to attend.
KIPP, which stands for Knowledge is Power Program and was first founded in 1994, has worked with the Miami school district for more than a year — and is opening its first school there this summer — and has worked with Newark and New York City for more than a decade. But KIPP has not worked with any of the three districts on college completion.
