Parents are banging on the gates to get into top charters like KIPP and North Star Academy, and to say no to any further expansion would lock them out for good.
Russakoff tells inspiring stories about some teachers and students doing remarkable work in impossible circumstances, and the much-ballyhooed KIPP charter schools actually seem to be living up to their reputation in Newark.
Rouhanifard has said partnering with successful school operators like Mastery, KIPP, and Uncommon will allow the district to serve more students in modern, updated buildings.
A 2012 Stanford study concluded that charter school kids in Newark gained an additional seven-and-a-half months in reading instruction and nine months in math over their public school peers.
One family moved from suburban Sicklerville to Camden, so their seven kids could attend KIPP.
“I want to point out, our kids rocked, they absolutely did,” said Drew Martin, executive director of KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy, to loud applause.
Norcross’ family foundation and The Cooper Foundation helped create KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy, which held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting Wednesday at its gleaming new building near downtown.
"Your odds have doubled of being in a good school if you're an African American kid in Newark," said Ryan Hill, director of Kipp New Jersey, which operates five charter schools in the city.
